“Since 2013, Protopasta has valued quality, reliability, and creativity. We seek to reduce waste in our production and build relationships in our community.”

We’ve taken many steps over the years to ensure our commitment to these values. The next phase of this commitment is finally here: Recycled PLA! We’ve collected our high-quality waste stream and turned it into high-quality recycled filament.

  • Made from our very own rescued waste stream
  • Compare to Black PLA, but with some sparkles based on waste stream
  • Fully compounded to ensure consistency throughout a batch

Prop 65: This product contains a chemical, Carbon Black, which is known to the State of CA to cause cancer when unbound particles are inhaled.

Recycled PLA colors may resemble other colors or appear totally unique depending on the waste source of a given batch. In either case, the color is indeed unique and unknown before we make the filament (this is why we opted for numbers, rather than names). When gone from our shelves, the same color will never be made again. We are mixing 100kg batches and fully compounding our materials to ensure color consistency within the batch. While we are overwriting the color of some PLA to make it black (with glitter still showing through), we are seeking to maintain color whenever possible. So far, we’ve ended up with many beautiful colors!

Buttery smooth print quality

I got a spool of this last month and it has been working great for printing the base parts of my Bulwark blaster. Just wanted to add my review and confirm that I did receive a solid black PLA spool, and I might be buying another one!

Buy beware

The description said "Compare to Black PLA, but with some sparkles based on waste stream". The filament I received should have been described as "silver sparkles with some black." I guess that's what I get for trying to be environmentally conscious instead of just ordering actual black filament. I figured recycled would be cheaper too, but apparently we get a mystery color for the same price as a real color with an accurate name.

Protopasta, Filament by Protoplant

Hello David, Thank you for giving Protopasta a try! Sorry to let you down with Recycled Black PLA!!! I have our Recycled Black PLA batch samples in front of me, and I'm not seeing many sparkles. Please reply with photos of the spool label and filament so I can see what you are seeing. For some more background, we replaced Imperfect PLA with Recycled PLA to reduce misunderstanding. With Imperfect Pasta every spool was a mystery color and weight. With Recycled PLA, each batch is mass-mixed and fully-compounded for consistent color, then re-extruded for a full 1kg spool. In regards to price, we considered do we charge less, more, or the same. Recycled costs us more because it requires more processing work. That said, recycling is important to us so we decided even with a higher effort, not to charge more. In any case, I'm confident we can get you something more to your taste, recycled or not. Once you follow up with photos of what you received, we'll have a better understanding of what product to replace yours with. All our best, Alex
