Improved Rusting Method for Iron Prints

Rust.  Patina.  Artifact.  Great words to describe beautiful weathered finishes you'd expect from old, metal objects, but how is that related to 3D Printing?  For a truly unique experience in 3D Printing, Proto-pasta Iron PLA can be rusted to create a modern artifact and here's how:

What You'll Need:

  • Safety glasses and gloves
  • A well-ventilated workspace
  • A Proto-pasta Iron 3D Print
  • Rusting solution
    • Hydrogen Peroxide
    • White vinegar
    • Salt
  • Spray bottle, brush, or towel
  • Wire brush (optional)
  • Plastic bag (optional)
  • Some sun or a heating duct (optional)

Steps:

  1. Simply, mix peroxide and vinegar - then add salt until mixture is saturated
  2. Spray or brush rusting solution on to your Print and watch it rust
  3. For improved rust effect, try:
    • brushing the surface of your Proto-pasta Iron 3D Print to expose more metal
    • wrapping your part with a towel and/or sealing in a plastic bag to retain moisture
    • warming the solution to accelerate the reaction
Here is Dustin demonstrating how easy it is to rust your Proto-pasta Iron prints!
